FISH MARKET : NANDHIVARMAN WROTE IN 2004 : INAUGURATED IN 2014 : TILL DATE ONLY ICE IS SOLD NOT FISH

Hygienic Fish Markets: Fashion of the Day

The wind of globalization is introducing new concepts like air-conditioned vegetable and fish markets by private parties providing jobs to entrepreneurial youth. At the same time we have Pondicherry’s over crowded

Main market, a place you have to plough your way in a stream of sweat and foul smell. Ever increasing garbage accumulation poses problems for municipal sanitary workers who toil tirelessly to keep market surroundings clean. The Lorries that bring the daily requirements for market and small vehicles that bring fish struggle to catch space with consumers who in a haste to park as they please in the entrances of the market.

This is a scene of chaos with increase in population. In Pondicherry region we have fish markets in Pondicherry, Muthialpet, Ariyankuppam, Nellithoppu, Madukarai and Villiyanur and temporary markets have sprung up in roadsides at many sub urban places. Nowadays people are looking for hygiene in every aspect of life and consumer awareness is at its peak. Further the perishable products must be sold in haste thereby fish vendors loose their revenue. The setting up of cost price shops by private parties and cooperative institutions too jumping into that bandwagon not to be left behind is a telling tale of our times. Vegetable stalls that offer fresh vegetables in air-conditioned surroundings have cropped up. Chickens and Mutton are sold in shops making it easy for people to buy at various places.

But in spite of all this the fish market, vegetable market, flower market and small shops that sell from provisions to brooms are within a limited space of the main market restricted by various constraints making it impossible to expand.

In such scenario a new Air Conditioned Fish for You shop set by an enterprising young educated youth K.Ponnambalam of Vanarapet, that has come up at the beginning of the Mahatma Gandhi Road near Railway station is refreshing experiment breaking from past.

A student from nearby Veerampattinam fisher-men village of Pondicherry, P.Saravanane who is the 4 th son of a traditional fisherman, doing his second year in doctorate in fish pathology at the Sterling University of Scotland U.K having completed his M.FSc. (Master of Fisheries Science) at Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute Cochin on his visit to his home felt that fish markets here must be improved to make it places of hygiene in order to attract better prices for fish apart from consumer convenience and comfort of buying in a cleaner environment.

To wash sands and filth in the fish catches that comes to market, P.Saravanane suggests setting up of a one-ton capacity of filtering steel tank at the entrance of the market. Immediately after washing fresh icing must be done for the preservation. The fish market should be completely closed and centrally air conditioned for maintaining low temperature, which can reduce the quick spoilage of fish. Hygienic and decent dressing for the fish vendors encouraged. Separate cabins with a washable fish-displaying table should be constructed for selling the fish and be provided with a clear drainage channel, which eventually leads to a common drainage canal. Display table must have fiberglass doors so that fishes can be displayed on an ice layer in the glass cabinet. Each cabin must be given separate pipe connections for easy and quick washing of cabin before and after selling. A hygienic and eco-friendly bag for packing the fish is introduced. There should be a high capacity and quality flake ice machine inside the market for preserving the fish and also for the display unit. Definite control measures should be taken for fly and other insects. It’s also wise to have a cold storage room with two different temperatures like 4°c and -20°c with clear racks and boxes for short time and long time storage of fish respectively. The market should also be provided with two doors each one for entry and exit. A separate fish cleaning room should be constructed with same facility like fish selling area with a washable table with the provision of tap water pipe connection for each fish dresser. Use of clean stainless steel knife and other fish cutting instruments is encouraged. There should be an exit in the fish dressing room so that the customers can directly exit the market, says P.Saravanane who wants to see his hometown and its markets improve to reach the western standards at least stage by stage.

Fish lovers are braving all ordeals in fish markets to buy their choice and scared housewives wait for street vendors to bring fish to their doors. Let us make their life not only less miserable but make it pleasant to both sellers and buyers. Let Fish woman who carry head-loads of fish and are frowned upon regain their self respect and dignity in pursuing their marketing with changing needs of our times. Fish is wealth and not filth that comes to markets. Let planners plan ultra modern fish markets, while private stalls come up every where to cater the needs of growing population conscious of cleaner environment.

LOCAL ADMINISTRATION SECRETARY S.HEMACHANDRAN called me and Dr.SARAVANANE POOBALANE AND GAVE SHAPE TO THIS FISH MARKET INAUGURATED in 2014... TIL NOW YOU CAN SEE ONLY ICE IS BEING SOLD THERE, EVEN YESTERDAY I SAW THE BOARDS IN BOTH ENTRANCES... WHY CANT IT BE GIVEN TO FISHERMEN ........

AT THE DAWN OF THIS MILLENNIUM............. ONE YEAR OF DRAVIDA PERAVAI CAMPAIGNS

At the dawn of this millennium Dravida Peravai , the political party wedded to Periyarism-Annaism emerges as a front runner to uphold the legacy of the Dravidian movement. The agenda and actions of this year i.e. 2000 AD will speak for itself .

On the very first day of January 1 of 2000, 1856 cargo handling labourers and 64 staff were made Government Staff under Tuticurin Port Trust, in culmination of 18 year long demand. This was possible because Ministry of Surface Transport headed by Comrade Nitish Kumar Vide Notification no: PT-18011/3/98/PT had nominated N.Nandhivarman, V.V.D.Brammanandham, P.Kathirvel and Anton Gomez as Trustees of Tutucurin Port Trust. Immediately N.Nandhivarman took up the matter with the NDA led Union Government through NDA Convenor Comrade George Fernandes. Meanwhile Nitish Kumar was replaced by Rajnath Singh as Minister of Surface Transport. Yet 2000 Labourers were made Government staff with effect from 1.1.2000 and the above poster is a thanksgiving poster.

There are 668 registered political parties  in the registers of the Election Commission of India. In this lists drawn alphabetically Dravida Peravai stands 217.

Subject: Plea to uphold Indian interests in Exclusive Economic Zone of the Oceans and the urgent need to place our claims to demarcate our zone before UNITED NATIONS in pursuance of the International Law of Seas 1982 regarding...
In a long drawn process through four conventions covering high seas, territorial seas, continental shelf and living marine resources, beginning in 1958, United Nations had striven to evolve consensus which culminated in the United Nations mooted International Law of Seas 1982. It was ratified by India in 1995.

This law is a boon to Indian maritime trade, Indian Seafood exports,Indian mid-sea Oil exploration, and more particularly to our Indian fisheremen and it is rather unfortunate that Indian government is making inordinate delays in presenting its case before United Nations. Though time is left till 2005, in the interest of boosting Indian economy, without wasting a single minute, it is essential,Dravida Peravai urges our Indian Government to stake our claim for demarcating our Exclusive Economic Zone.

As per article 76 of the International Law of Seas 1982 " The coastal state shall establish the outer edge of the continental margin wherever the same extends beyond 200 nautical miles from the baselines from which the breadth of the territorial sea is measured. On sub-marine ridges, the Continental shelf's outer limit shall not exceed 350 nautical miles from the baselines from which the breadth of the territorial sea is measured"

In accordance with this provision INDIA IS LIKELY TO GAIN 7 to 9 MILLION SQUARE KILOMETERS. It will not be out of context to invoke the comments of Late Ram Manohar Lohia and our beloved Comrade George Fernandes on the loss of more than 1 lakh square kilometers to our enemy neighbours. This loss can be made good if timely steps are taken to press for our rightful boundaries under EEZ.

As a party of the Dravidian Movement we are interested in the revoking of the treaty granting our Kachatheevu islands to Srilanka. If the new EEZ comes into operation INDIA and SRILANKA will have to freshly demarcate their zones. And by natural application of the article 76 of the International Law of the Seas, India will have to regain Kachatheevu. This will also put an end to indiscriminate killings of our Indian fisheremen..............................

TAMIL MARTYRS DAY SHOULD BE WORLD MOTHER LANGUAGES DAY ....... 11 YEARS AGO NANDHIVARMAN

INJUSTICE TO TAMIL BY UNESCO ON WORLD MOTHER LANGUAGES DAY : 18.8.2010 NANDHIVARMAN WROTE...

Madam Irina Bokava
Director General UNESCO
7, Place de Fontenoy 75352
Paris 07 SP France

Respected Secretary General

You are the custodian of the culture of humanity, and a neutral judge to uphold the common heritage of humanity. Though by depicting all worlds’s languages as tree, scholars have said all languages have emanated from common source, the quest to find that common source is yet to deliver result. Scientists have found FOX P2, a common gene that triggered human speech, but each and every language speaker has pride and reverence for his or her mother tongue. Scientists have proven that race is a myth and all men have common gene. Yet mankind lives in various countries speaking numerous mother tongues. UNESCO is for preserving all mother tongues and protects endangered languages. Such an institution should update history, is our request.

Alexander Graham Bell is not first to invent telephone, but an Italian Antonio Mussie , the American Senate debated to update history when new truth emerged. Dravida Peravai, a tiny political party of Tamils in India, urges UNESCO to update the history regarding the celebrations of world mother languages day. It is needless to state that the police firing and death of 5 persons in the struggle of students of then East Pakistan when Urdu was imposed as sole official language of Pakistan in 1950-52, is taken into consideration to fix February 21st as World Mother Languages day. We also salute those martyrs, and the love of their mother tongue culminated in the birth of a liberated new nation, Bangladesh.

Tamils consider their mother tongue as Primary Classical Language of the World, as Devaneya Paavanar, had written in his treatise. When Hindi alone was imposed sole official language of India in 1965, the students and people of Tamilnadu fought a long drawn battle where men committed self immolation to stall that move. Nowhere on Earth, for their mother tongue, people had burnt themselves, and comparing to killing in police firing, which too took lives in Tamilnadu too, the supreme sacrifice of those martyrs must be honored by humanity. We are enclosing news paper clippings of the Tamil Language Struggle of 1965, and producing Xerox copies of few pages from the book Struggle for Freedom of Languages in India written by Former Vice Chancellor of Alagappa University in Tamilnadu Dr.A.Ramasamy, to bring to the notice of UNESCO that far greater sacrifices were made by Tamils, and if any other linguistic group had done more sacrifice in the struggle to save their mother tongue, Tamils will accept truth and withdraw their claim to be the topmost in sacrifice for mother tongue.

In view of the fresh facts brought to the notice of UNESCO, we Tamils, Indian Tamils appeal to UNESCO to shift the date of World Mother Languages Day to January 25 th, the date of Tamil struggle. I hope our Bengali brethren who till day had that honor will take it sportive and be happy that they were holding the championship shield from 1999 to 2010. All countries and representatives of UNESCO must impartially accept the historical update provided by us after cross checking on their own or seeking further references from us or Government of Tamilnadu, a State under Indian Union.

We pray that due place of honor is given to Tamil martyrs who self immolated themselves, the photographs of six such people in a cut out put by our party in 2008 in remembrance of their sacrifices is enclosed. Also the photograph of painting of three Tamil martyrs Chinnasamy, Sivalingam and Aranganathan prepared by lady painter Sathya and presented to me is enclosed.

Let me quote from TIME dated 19th February 1965 “In Tamil speaking Madras State where five people have burnt themselves to death in protest; a mob captured two policemen and burned them alive. In Malayalam speaking Kerala State mobs attacked post offices and trains, and students signed pledges of resistance to the imposition of Hindi using their own blood as ink….. the death toll in the riots rose to 60.”

Also a chapter Fire Spreads in the book mentioned earlier and released by Kalaignar M.Karunanithi DMK President, current Chief Minister of Tamilnadu few months before he became 5th time Chief Minister of Tamilnadu is enclosed to show that even in Bengal, where Bengali is spoken, and the protest against Hindi triggered opposition.

Dravida Peravai appeals to UNESCO, that while there is wide spread heart bleeding over the failure of UN to save Eelam Tamils from genocide, at least by the symbolic gesture of declaring the Tamil Struggle day of Indian Tamils, as the day of World Mother Languages day, a healing process can begin, by correcting a historical mistake of ignoring Tamil sacrifices.
